Small acts of kindness

Never underestimate how far small acts of kindness can go in life. A small gesture of kindness can make all the difference in someone's life, especially for someone fighting the battle of a lifetime. Over the past three years of this journey, I have been the recipient of several unexpected, but much appreciated, gestures of kindness. Thank you for each and every one of them, you know who you are.

For anyone reading this and wanting to help someone battling cancer, I want to share a few ideas, that could be helpful.

  • Your prayers (this costs nothing and can be done anywhere!)

  • Unexpected flowers from a friend (who doesn't like a happy surprise?)

  • Call / text (again, this costs nothing, but lets the person know you care and are thinking of them.)

  • Activity book (an adult activity book helped me to spend many quiet hours after surgery when I wasn't allowed to do much of anything.)

  • Run to the grocery store for them (it can be so exhausting to be up and about for more than a few minutes at a time while recovering from surgery and going through radiation. Don't ask "do you need me to go", instead say "I'm going to the store today, what would you like".)

  • Their favorite coffee (again, a happy surprise!)

  • Cook a meal (one less thing on their "to-do list"! And eating well will help them recover.)

  • Babysit so they can rest (who can rest when young kids need your attention?)

  • A stuffed animal (comforting, even for an adult)

  • A cozy blanket (I have a favorite blanket that I always use when I am not feeling well because it is SO comfy!)

  • A ride to their next appointment (driving can be exhausting, especially early in recovery, and your company may be needed as well.)

  • Your company (recovery can be a long, and lonely, process. Be a pleasant distraction!)

The possibilities are endless, and your thoughtful gesture will be appreciated more than you could imagine! This world needs more kindness, let it start with you!
